CHATHAM – As the Cape Cod Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance’s first-ever artist in residence, Bourne native Stone Dow has been busy capturing the essence of the area’s vibrant fishing industry.
On land and out on the water, Dow is looking to give Cape Codders an up-close and in-depth look at areas of the industry that people normally don’t see, with stories coming right from the source.
“The common language that we’ve had in approaching every video we’ve made is letting the fishing community tell their own story,” Dow said.
Six videos have already been completed and will be uploaded onto the Alliance’s social media channels and Dow expects to complete more than 50 videos over the next year on a variety of topics.
The artist in residence program was a collaborative effort with the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
“As a documentarian, I’m always interested in meeting new people, having conversations and learning about their lives,” Dow said of his plans to use video to tell stories that will be shared on social media and elsewhere. He began his part-time position earlier this month.
AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake said tapping into the region’s talent made sense for this creative initiative, an approach that the Alliance’s CEO John Pappalardo wholeheartedly endorsed.
“I remember John saying, ‘I don’t want to hire a marketing agency. I want something special that only an artist can deliver,’” Wake recalled. “That’s when I knew we were on the same page and that this collaboration was just the beginning of something beneficial for Cape artists.”
Dow, who holds a bachelor’s of science degree in television, radio and film from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, has more than seven years’ experience as a writer, director, and producer. He currently serves as a technical consultant for the popular TED Conferences.
He recently moved back to Cape Cod where he lives with Julia Goldstein and their five-month-old son Gil. Dow said one constant in his career has been his interest in helping organizations like the Fishermen’s Alliance tell their stories, which is why Pappalardo is so excited for this new venture.
“Our fishing community’s vitality has played a crucial role in our history, arts and culture, and will continue to do so in the future,” Pappalardo said.
“Joining the Arts Foundation to chronicle and celebrate that unique role makes all the sense in the world.”
At the conclusion of this one-year project, the Fishermen’s Alliance and the AFCC will host an event showcasing Dow’s work.
