Bourne Officials Advised to Make Safety Improvements to Dangerous Pocasset Intersection

Bourne Town Hall

BOURNE – Recommendations for safety improvements to a dangerous intersection in Pocasset are being considered by Bourne officials.

The town hired a traffic consulting firm, BETA Group, to conduct an analysis of the intersection of Barlow’s Landing Road and Shore Road. Representatives from the company conducted traffic counts of the intersection in October and presented the findings to the Board of Selectmen in a mid-December meeting.

The group made several recommendations for the intersection, including turning what’s now a two-way stop into a four-way stop. BETA also recommends that the town restripe and recolor the crosswalks in the intersection and install “Stop Ahead” signage on the approaches to Shore Road.

BETA Group Representative Greg Lucas reported to the Board that the traffic counts conducted during the analysis were adjusted for peak summer travel by using data collected by the Cape Cod Commission. The analysis found a 42-percent increase in traffic volume on the roadways between November and peak summer months.

The group also advises the town to repaint the double yellow center lines of the roadways as well as repaint the white stop and edge lines.

Lucas says the group’s recommendations are backed by the total traffic volume and the number of crashes that have occurred either at the intersection and both roadways.

Before moving forward, the Select Board has decided to present the group’s recommendations to the rest of town government.

BETA Group Representative Greg Lucas: “The purpose of the study was to evaluate pedestrian safety and also the feasibility of intersection improvements related to safety and traffic control.”

“We looked at the speed limits. There’s a 25 mile-per-hour speed limit on Barlow’s Landing Road in the vicinity of Shore Road trying to slow people as they approach the intersection.”

“We would recommend implementing four-way stop signs at all approaches.”
