Bourne Officials Looking for Beach Parking Solutions

BOURNE – With parking issues plaguing beaches in Bourne, town officials will soon begin discussing solutions, which may include shuttle service from either the town’s middle or high schools.

With about 300 spots available for roughly 5,000 sticker-holders, Selectman Stephen Mealy says shuttle service could not only serve beach-goers, but also give the economy a boost by stopping at local businesses; all at a minimal expense for taxpayers.

“My thought is if you charged a minimal fee for the parking, you could maybe subsidize or even pay for the shuttle service back and forth,” Mealy said.

While parking is an issue, Mealy adds that overcrowding is also a concern, especially for beaches like Bottles Landing.

“There’s 16 parking spaces and the beach is relatively small and that could be overwhelmed very quickly, so those are the kind of issues, if this goes forward that will have to be discussed, and how to address residents parking stickers, beach stickers, etc..,” Mealy said.

Public discussions surrounding the potential for shuttle service are expected to begin in earnest after the new year.
