Bourne PD Breaks Ground for New Police Station

BUZZARDS BAY – Shovels were put to dirt for the first time this week in Buzzards Bay for the construction of a new Bourne Police Station.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday for the nearly $18 million facility that will be built on Armory Road.

The new police station will have the latest technology, proper locker room, training room and office spaces.

Police Chief Dennis Woodside says it is satisfying to see work taking place.

“It’s going to be very interesting to see how the project develops moving forward,” Woodside said. “It’s an all encompassing project but it’s overdue for the town of Bourne and the officers that work here at the department. We are very excited to see it moving forward.”

The current station on Main Street was built in 1959. Several additions have been made to the building, including a second floor in the late 1970s.

Woodside said the biggest issue with the current Main Street station is a lack of space.

“The department has grown significantly over the last 50 to 60 years and the building just doesn’t accommodate it,” Woodside said. “In addition to that we have electrical problems, heating and air conditioning problems, mold issues and asbestos. This building has it all.”

Woodside commends the current officers who do not complain about the issues with the building.

“They come in and go to work,” Woodside said. “They drop their bags in the hallway and they go into this little, cramped rollcall room. They get their briefing from the sergeants and they go out on patrol and they try and do the best they can.”

Although most of an officer’s shift is on the road, but using resources at the station, like writing reports or booking suspects, can be an issue.

“They just do a stand up job and they don’t complain and they don’t file grievances,” Woodside said.

Construction is expected to be completed in 16 to 18 months.

The project is being coordinated with the construction of a new wastewater treatment facility on the same site.

“There are a lot of different components to this particular project because of the coordination and that is going to be crucial,” Woodside said. “That coordination is ongoing and there is a lot to it. A lot more than we ever thought.”

Bourne residents approved funding the new station at Special Town Meeting in October 2016.
