Bourne Police Contact MassDOT Over Bourne Rotary Road Markings Concerns

BOURNE – After fielding a number of concerns from drivers regarding new road marking at the Bourne rotary, Bourne’s police chief was prompted to email MassDOT, to express his concerns that the markings may be confusing to some.

The Bourne Rotary approach from the Bourne Bridge and MacArthur Boulevard feature a double arrow, which points straight and to the left. The left arrow runs over a white dot, which tells drivers to go counterclockwise around the rotary. For Chief Dennis Woodside, the arrow may confuse drivers who aren’t familiar with rotaries.

“I just found that that marking to the left could be confusing,” Woodside said. “I would just hate to see someone go down there and go the wrong way around the rotary, I just didn’t think it was necessary in that spot.”

In addition, the approach to the rotary from Sandwich Road has been split into two lanes, with the right lane meant for traffic heading onto the Bourne Bridge.

For Woodside, this too could cause traffic issues.

“I’m just worried about people not yielding, if they think they can go to the right and go right over the bridge, they still have to yield and I think they may not do that as well.”

MassDOT has yet to respond to Chief Woodside’s email.
