Bourne Police Step Up Crosswalk Enforcement

KA_Bourne Scenic Park Bridge_041816035BOURNE – Motorists traveling along Main Street in Buzzards Bay might want to make sure they stop for pedestrians the rest of the summer.

Bourne police are stepping up crosswalk enforcement through grant funding from the Massachusetts Executive Office for Public Safety and Security.

Citations for not yielding to pedestrians are $200.

“It’s important that cars are slowing down and keeping their speeds down and yielding to any pedestrians who may be in the crosswalks,” said Bourne Police Lieutenant Brandon Esip.

Esip said motorists have to yield for pedestrians at or in a crosswalk.

“You also cannot pass a vehicle that is stopped for someone in a crosswalk,” he said. “That can cause a serious hazard to a pedestrian that doesn’t see the other vehicle coming.”

Esip said police are also making sure pedestrians are also using crosswalks.

“The pedestrian does have the right of way but just running into the street is not using due caution,” he said.

The department is also focusing on bicycle safety and making sure riders are wearing helmets and using lights at night.

Esip said the purpose of the increased enforcement is not to raise revenue but to make motorists and pedestrians aware.

“Generally warnings have been successful in getting the message across,” Esip said. “Repeat offenders and serious instances are treated like they should be but in general the warnings have been quite effective.”
