BOURNE – The Bourne Police Department and the Bourne Police Facility Building Committee is trying to win over voters for a new station, one which could cost close to $18 million.
Ahead of an initial vote at the October 17th town meeting, the department has posted a multitude of information about the old building’s insufficient qualities on social media and have invited the public to come tour the existing structure and decide for themselves.
Police Chief Dennis Woodside said the project is long overdue and is completely necessary.
“We want everyone to look at the project and see why we’re doing it,” he said. “We don’t want to raise taxes either, but this would be like a mortgage; a temporary tax.”
Initial estimates for a new building included figures over $20 million, a number which the department was informed would be too much.
A 2008 municipal survey listed the current police station at number one in terms of need for replacement.
Plans for the new building focus on matching the potential needs over the next 50 years, but Woodside said they also include a pseudo-removable roof which could come off in the event that the department needs further expansion.
If accepted at October’s town meeting, the measure would require another vote on December 6th.
Woodside said he encourage all residents to tour the old station in order to put the proposed capital project’s price into perspective.
