Bourne School District to Offer Tours of Peebles Ahead of Building Vote

BOURNE – The Peebles School Building Committee is working to educate Bourne taxpayers about the need for a new elementary school on Trowbridge Road to replace the aging facility.

The proposed $39.9 million facility would replace a building that Superintendent Steven Lamarche said presents staff and students with daily challenges.

“It was built very quickly in 1963, and six years later they had to put an annex on the building just because of the overcrowding at that point,” Lamarche said. “It wasn’t built to be an architectural gem.”

Lamarche cites a list of issues, including cracks, leaks and an “overwhelming” amount of asbestos-containing materials.

The Peebles School Building Committee will offer a tour of the old building on Saturday, October 15^th from 1 to 3 p.m. as part of a range of plans for community outreach regarding the need for a new school.

Meanwhile, the town of Bourne will also soon decide whether or not to invest in a new police station.

Lamarche said the old station’s condition is very poor and warrants replacement, but added that he hopes the town will also choose to make a building decision based on the needs of children and their learning.

The measure to build a new elementary school requires two successful votes: one at the October 7^th special town meeting and another at the December special town ballot.
