Bourne Selectman Seeking State Senate Vacancy

Bourne Selectman, and former Bourne Police Officer, Jared MacDonald to seek open Plymouth & Barnstable State Senate seat.

BOURNE – Another candidate is entering into the race for the open Plymouth & Barnstable State Senate seat.

Bourne Selectman Jared MacDonald plans to file paperwork this week to establish a campaign committee and run for the seat as a Republican.

“I feel really confident that I am prepared to fill the seat,” MacDonald said.

Republican Vinny deMacedo, of Plymouth, officially stepped down from the seat in late November to accept a new position with Bridgewater State University.

MacDonald currently works as a self-employed electrician and is a former Bourne police officer, who was shot in the line of duty in 2015.

Since his retirement from the police department, MacDonald said he has been venturing out into politics.

“It seems to be going well as a selectman,” MacDonald said.

“I think I have a lot to offer with my broad experience in the past.”

MacDonald feels serving on the town’s board had provided an eye opening into the political process.

MacDonald said a major issue facing the region is the potential construction of new bridges over the Cape Cod Canal.

“I really feel it effects the entire district,” MacDonald said. “Even Pembroke and Kingston – that backlash of traffic on weekends. If we can find a way to get that to go smoothly it benefits all of the area, not just the Cape.”

MacDonald hopes the district and its constituents have a bigger say and a seat at the table with Massachusetts Department of Transportation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials.

MacDonald said he is looking forward to the process.

“It’s not every day that someone like myself, with a small business or middle-class, gets this opportunity to serve this district, or any political seat for that matter,” MacDonald said.

He said he looks forward to getting out and meeting people during the campaign process.

MacDonald anticipates some kind of kickoff event for his campaign later this week.

The field for the empty seat is getting crowded as MacDonald will join Bourne attorney Jay McMahon on the Republican side.

There are also five Democrats who have announced runs for the seat, including Falmouth Selectman and Assembly of Delegates representative Susan Moran; Plymouth Selectman John Mahoney, commercial lobster fisherman Jack Stanton of Sandwich; Thomas Moakley, of West Falmouth, who is on the staff of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office; and Becky Coletta, a Pembroke lawyer and chairwoman of the town’s planning board.

Dates for special election primaries and the general election have not been finalized.
