Bourne Vet Elected National Vice Commander of the American Legion

BOURNE – A Bourne veteran was elected as a national vice commander at the American Legion’s national convention in Indianapolis last week and will help serve nearly two million Legion members.

Francis MacDonald Jr., a member of the 26th Yankee Division American Legion Post 230 in Bourne, served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 until 1978. He then went onto the U.S. Army Reserve in 1978, retiring as a command sergeant major in 2013. 

MacDonald first joined The American Legion in 1980. 

He has held various offices at every level of The American Legion, including National Executive Committeeman from 2015 to 2017, and department commander from 2010 to 2011.

Additionally, MacDonald has served on a number of national committees including the National Security Council, Marketing Commission, Children & Youth Commission, Legislative Commission and Legislative Council.   

He is also a member of the National American Legion Press Association, National Association of Department Historians American Legion, Army Navy Air Force Veterans in the Canada United States Chapter, and Past Department Commanders Club.

With 16 Gold Brigade awards, MacDonald is the membership guru for the Department of Massachusetts. 

MacDonald holds a MBA from Western New England University, a post graduate certificate in Acquisition Logistics from the Naval Post Graduate Program and a certificate in Business Enterprise Integration from Boston University. 

He retired from the federal government as a supervisory logistic management specialist in 2006 and currently works part time as an administrator for the town of Sandwich facilities department.

He and his wife Maureen have two daughters; a son and four grandchildren who are all members of the American Legion Family. 

MacDonald is one of 12 national officers.
