MASHPEE – The Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod held their biggest fundraising event of the year yesterday at the New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee and it included a special appearance.

The 2004, 2007 and 2013 Red Sox World Series trophies were on hand for the organization’s 18th annual golf tournament.

President of the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod Jim Kiley said getting the trophies down to the event was made possible by the owners of 99 Restaurant & Pub.

The World Series trophies do make frequent trips outside of Fenway Park but not usually all three together.

Red Sox Security Supervisor John McDermott was on hand and said the trophies are made available for municipal functions, charitable functions and trips connected with the Jimmy Fund.

Belmont teen Matt Messer can’t wait to show off his photo with the trophies.

“It’s very special,” he said. “I’ll definitely share it with my friends and get to show off and say I was with these.”

Messer said seeing the trophies brings back memories and made him think about the players that brought home the championships.

“You really think about the players that hold them and how hard they worked to get those trophies and all the people you look up to that once held those trophies,” he said.

Centerville resident Paul Ruane was also excited to see hardware won by his favorite team.

“It is a total thrill,” Ruane said. “My father spent his entire life listening on the radio and never had a World Series and for me to have three of them in my lifetime, it is fantastic.”

The golf tournament was followed by a gala dinner and silent auction to help support the 900 Cape Cod children and teens participating in the Boys and Girls Club.

Kiley said the organization was hoping to raise at least $90,000 from the event.
