Boys & Girls Club to Host Narcan Training Event

MASHPEE – The opioid epidemic continues to be an issue across Cape Cod and the Boys & Girls Club is holding an event to prepare the public to help respond to overdoses.

The club’s Mashpee location will host an AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod Narcan Training and Overdose Prevention Education Hour on March 7 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The training session will help attendees recognize an overdose, respond to the situation and learn how to administer naloxone, a drug which can reverse opioid overdoses.

“This is a disease that knows no boundaries,” said Ruth Provost, the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod. “And it, frankly, is hitting everyone on Cape Cod. I’m sure that most of the people…actually know someone or knows someone who knows someone who has been affected by opioids.”

Provost said opioid addiction can affect individuals of all ages and economic backgrounds.

Naloxone can be purchased by anyone at a pharmacy for around $20, according to Provost.

“Everybody should carry some because you never know if you are shopping if someone is going to overdose,” Provost said. “You never know when you can actually save a life by having this simple drug on hand and being able to administer it quickly.”

Drop ins at the event are welcome but the club will serve food and would like a head-count for planning purposes.

Anyone interested in attending should contact the Boys & Girls Club at 508-477-8845.
