BREWSTER – Selectmen in Brewster have voted to move forward with a with a commercial razor clam pilot program.
The initiative seeks to gauge whether the town’s shellfish department can manage razor clamming in the community and if it is supportable by the fishery.
The Board of Selectmen agreed to the program after years of requests from local fishermen and a review of similar policies in neighboring towns.
“We have talked to our counterparts in the other towns and came up with regulations that are consistent with them” explained Chris Miller, Brewster’s Director of Natural Resources, “The larger, marketable clams are the ones that we put in, about a five-inch length.”
Under the program, commercial harvesting of razor clams was opened late last month to a limited number of participants who will be allowed to harvest through late September.
Brewster’s Shellfish Department will review data in the fall and consider whether the program will be extended.
