BREWSTER – The annual Big Fix makes heads to Brewster this weekend for its seventh year.
Housing Assistance Corporation is hosting the one-day service event on Saturday, which brings a group of volunteers to the town to make small improvements to homes of veterans, seniors and disabled homeowners.
About 250 volunteers are participating in this year’s fix and will be conducting tasks like yard work, hauling trash, making small repairs and moving heavy/bulky items for 14 homes.
“The idea is to help with these small projects that sometimes these people can’t get done and that starts affecting their quality of life as these things add up,” said HAC Director of Community Relations and Fundraising Laura Reckford.
Over 1,000 volunteers have worked on 74 homes from Bourne to Dennis since the event began in 2010.
HAC began their campaign to look for volunteers for the event back in June and had a strong response.
“The reason we get the word out super early on the event is because the number of volunteers who commit to the event determines the amount of people we can help that day,” said Reckford.
Last year’s fix was in Bourne, where 12 homes received a variety of repairs in three hours.
Brewster is the furthest Cape town that the event has traveled to.
Next year the event will be held in Falmouth.
