Lower Cape Towns Consider Regional CERT Team

BREWSTER – Brewster officials are getting behind the creation of a regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for the Lower Cape.

These teams consist of volunteer citizens who aid first responders during emergency situations.

“Obviously, you never know when you’re going to have an emergency in your community,” said Brewster Fire Chief Robert Moran.

“An example would be the tornadoes that occurred a couple of weeks ago. So we’re looking at starting this Community Emergency Response Team to support and supplement the first responders in the community.”

The Lower Cape CERT would be made up of citizens from Brewster, Orleans, Chatham, and Harwich. Moran mentioned that the regional idea was better suited for these towns.

“What we found in talking about the regional team is that each town lacked the ability, not only management-wise but also personnel-wise, to come up with enough members for a team. This is why we moved towards the regional concept,” Moran explained.

Brewster’s select board unanimously voted in favor of the creation of the team.

Orleans, Chatham, and Harwich town officials will hear pitches for the team at a later date.
