Brewster Herring Run Has Banner Year

herringBREWSTER – Final counts are not yet in but herring counts at Stony Brook in Brewster appear to be substantially up this year.

Brewster resident Elliot Carr, whose book about the Brewster herring run was recently published, said he visits the run quite often and his wife is an official counter. He said those who spend time at the run have certainly noticed the increase in fish this spring.

“I think everybody who visits there, thinks they’re up substantially,” Carr said. “I would say there’s no question it is up dramatically.”

Carr said a new culvert at the run certainly did not hurt but it would be conjecture to say that it alone is responsible for a much-improved run.

He said the state’s moratorium of the taking of herring from runs which has been in place since 2009 would also have an impact, as well as other factors like weather.

Carr said he has been watching the run informally for at least 10 years.
