Banning Plastic Bags Proposal to be Discussed in Brewster

BREWSTER – Banning plastic bags has turned into quite the trend in Massachusetts, with 80 cities and towns in the state enacting regulations on the thin-film bags.

As for the Cape and Islands, all but two towns in the area have imposed a ban or any regulation on the bags.

Brewster Community Network (BCN) is hosting a forum at the Brewster Ladies Library next week explore the possibility of banning single-use plastic bags.

Interim Director of the Massachusetts Sierra Club Deb Pasternak has been selected as the featured speaker of the forum. Organizers say she plans to highlight the threats to environmental and human health that’s brought on by plastic pollution.

Pasternak will also discuss the need for zero-waste strategies, the bans on plastics already imposed in Massachusetts, and various approaches through local government that can be undertaken to enact a ban.

Other confirmed participants include Brewster Select Board Member Mary Chaffee, Shayna Ferullo of Snowy Owl, Chair of the Brewster Recycling Commission Meg Morris, and Madhavi Venkatesan of Sustainable Practices.

In addition, a panel of residents will provide and update on the effort to ban plastics in Brewster.

BCN encourages local business owners and town residents of all ages to attend the forum.

The forum is free and open to the public. It’s scheduled for September 13, running from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Brewster Ladies’ Library, located at 1822 Main Street.
