BREWSTER – The town of Brewster is looking to improve boat access at Long Pond.
The body of water is the largest pond on Cape Cod and is shared by Brewster and Harwich. It has three access points, two of which are in Harwich.
“It has significant activity in the summertime,” said Chris Miller, the town’s natural resources director. “A lot of people live on it and a lot of people recreate there.”
Design plans for a new boat ramp were presented to the Select Board last month which would include creating a second entrance to separate beach and boat traffic.
Boaters currently need to back into the lot and down the aging boat ramp, which Natural Resources Director Chris Miller said is in horrible condition and needs to be replaced.
“There’s large potholes. There is very little ability to use it unless the water is very high and you are putting your trailers and people at risk by continuing to use it as it is,” Miller said.
The condition of the ramp is even worse at its base under the water. Stormwater runoff is also a concern of the current state of the access road and ramp.
The water runs down the access road into the main lot where it pools and leaks through the poor asphalt and is discharged into the pond.
“Stormwater control is something that we want to make sure we handle with this refit,” Miller said.
The board voted unanimously to support the design.
