DENNIS PORT – Another Democrat has formally announced a run for the Cape and Islands State Senate.
Brewster Selectman Ben deRuyter gathered with supporters Sunday afternoon in Dennis Port to launch his campaign.
DeRuyter was born on Cape Cod, graduated from Nauset Regional High School, and earned a college degree and MBA from the University of Massachusetts.
“Cape Cod is a unique place, with a unique set of challenges and opportunities,” he said during his announcement.
“As a selectman in Brewster, I have seen what good government can accomplish by working with individuals to find solutions to our community’s challenges, and to create opportunities for all Cape Codders to succeed,” said deRuyter.
He initially launched a campaign for the First Barnstable State Representative seat two years ago, but dropped out early on.
DeRuyter enters the race with the most money in the bank among Democrats, with $58,274, according to filing with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.
Julian Cyr of Truro had $39,817.22 on hand, while Sheila Lyons reported $16,315.17.
Republican Jim Crocker, who has not formally entered the race but is expected to make a run, reported $50,270. Fellow Republican Anthony Schiavi had $17,244.56 in the bank at the end of the reporting period.
DeRuyter, who owns a restaurant in Provincetown, said knows what it means to create an opportunity.
“The Cape and Islands District needs a leader who will bring creative ideas to the table to solve the opioid crisis, to create good jobs, and to encourage young people to stay here,” he said.
