Brewster to Receive Affordable Housing Grant

BREWSTER – The Town of Brewster will soon receive a $1.68 million MassWorks Grant for the construction of the Brewster Woods affordable housing project.

The Brewster Housing Authority’s Brewster Road development will offer 30 units of affordable housing and be within walking distance of stores and close to Brewster’s senior housing.

The MassWorks Infrastructure Program supports housing growth and job creation and provides a source of capital funds for public infrastructure projects.

State Representative Tim Whelan (R-Brewster) thanked the Baker-Polito Administration and Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy for a continued commitment to Cape Cod and its communities.

“The Town of Brewster has been making great strides to increase their stock of affordable housing units and our municipal partners have been working hard with state government to help realize their goals,” Whelan said.

“Help for our young, working families is on the way.”

Brewster voters approved the creation of the Affordable Housing Trust in May 2018 and has since taken measures to continue the expansion of affordable and workforce housing in the community.

“This funding will provide a significant and essential financial boost to the Brewster Woods project,” said State Representative Sarah Peake (D-Provincetown.

“This grant award is another example of how government can work well for our citizens when people come together as state and local officials to make important projects like this happen.”

Since 2015, the Baker-Polito Administration has awarded over $358 million in MassWorks grants to support 177 projects in 128 communities.

Brewster Select Board Chair Dave Whitney says the Brewster Woods project highlights the importance of collaboration for moving housing initiatives forward and hinges on town and state groups working together.

“This MassWorks grant leverages years of hard work and strong local support to see this important project through to completion,” Whitney said.

“Most importantly, we thank our residents for recognizing and supporting affordable community housing as being an important aspect of a holistic and economically viable community.”
