BREWSTER – The Cape’s longest-serving town administrator retires Saturday at the age of 60.

Charles Sumner served 29 years in the Brewster position when he arrived there in 1986 from Littleton. He said even though the job has been rewarding, he’s looking forward to a change of pace.

“It’s been a wonderful career, but these jobs are demanding and I think I recognize that, for me, it was appropriate to move on,” Sumner said.

His stint saw the development of the town’s infrastructure from what he called “antiquated” to what it is today. According to Sumner, every single town building that the town owns is one he’s had a hand in renovating.

During the last several years, he said the largest challenge was combatting nitrogen in the waterways.

But one of the reasons he’s retiring fairly early is the demanding nature of the job, he said.

“The level of commitment and effort is just incredulous – even when I go on vacation, I’m checking my emails constantly,” he said. “Most of us are like that; it’s a job that doesn’t really stop anymore.”

Sumner said he  plans on using some of his now open schedule to go hiking, a hobby he’s involved himself with for many years.

He still plans on working in some capacity, however.

Sumner said that while his winter plans revolve around training for the Boston Marathon in the spring (an event he said he’s always wanted to take part in), he’s also considering joining committees and taking on part-time employment.

So to the many colleagues the man has shared in the nearly 30 years he has served in Brewster, Sumner said concerns should not be raised as to his availability.

“I’ll never leave Brewster,” he said.

  1. Charlie Sumner is covering up robberies from gas to safes stolen by James Jones Dpw Forman. As well as cover up police reports for threatening my life nothing happened to him. I have wittinesses up him and Carly Lombard bullieing me and I as well wittinessed them bullieng Dave Fay. Who was gay bashed so bad he went to a sphyic hospital Carly assaulted him like me and again nothing happened. In a private meeting with chief dick coch he straight out said Charlie never told him half of what’s going on in the Dpw. Well the selectmen took their side and never helped me . The fbi was contacted by me . To prove I was right about my life threatened and assaulted and more . I was pushed out like Jillian Douglass for helping me put a stop to the allowed hostile environment under Charlie Sumner. They lie about me. It’s sad that people like me Dave Fay and others who are honest get bashed and it’s allowed
