BARNSTABLE – A bridge dedication ceremony in honor of local World War II veteran was held over the weekend in Barnstable.
The Route 6 overpass over Phinney’s Lane was dedicated Saturday as the Louis Karras Memorial Bridge at a ceremony at the West Barnstable Deer Club.
Karras was a World War II US Army veteran who served in Europe with the 12th Armored Division.
He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in recognition of his performance in combat.
MassDot Administrator Tom Tinlin said there are some events he gets to take part in that are just more special than the others.
“We go and we have silver shovels and we cut ribbons and we have $200 million this job and $100 million that job and with all respect to those important jobs this one, I think, means more,” he said. “And it means more because when you think about the sacrifice, the heroism, the patriotism of the Karras family it’s humbling.”
PFC Karras is part of a large family which grew up on Main Street in Barnstable Village which sent eight sons to war and a daughter served as the first woman elected as a selectman.
Karras passed away in 2013 and the naming of the bridge has been a project his family had sought for years.
