COTUIT – A Broadway classic will be performed beginning next month at Cotuit Center for the Arts.

The opening performance of the musical “Gypsy” will be held on Tuesday, July 7, with performances to run through August 2.

“Gypsy” debuted on Broadway in 1959, where it ran for 702 performances. There was also a 1962 film and a 1993 television production.

The musical is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist, burlesque entertainer, actress and writer Gypsy Rose Lee and focuses on her mother, Rose.

The stage mother pushes her daughters to perform across the country on the vaudeville circuit.

David McCarty is the director and choreographer for the performances with Geraldine Boles as music director.

After the opening Tuesday performance, shows will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoons at 4.

McCarty says it’s a big, wonderful show with great music and great writing.

“The show is unique in that the songs are part of the storytelling,” McCarty said. “They move the plot forward and reveal the character’s emotional state.”

Some of the songs from the show include “Let Me Entertain You,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Together Wherever We Go.”

McCarty said there are 30 people in the cast, ranging in ages from 8 to over 65 and the musical includes something for everyone.

Tickets are $28 and $25 for seniors.
