BOURNE – The Massachusetts National Guard, along with several other state and federal agencies, have scheduled prescribed controlled burns at Camp Edwards for this week. The burns will take place Tuesday through Thursday, weather permitting.
The burns are primarily conducted for firefighter training, but they also provide ecological benefits. Officials try to duplicate the role of natural fire in maintaining a mosaic of ecological communities on Camp Edwards, which is home to 37 state listed species of plants and animals.
The fires will take place in the grasslands in the southern part of the base.
