Business Leaders Promote Shop Local Saturday

shopping02HYANNIS – Shoppers on the Cape descended on local malls and stores early this morning looking for bargains on Black Friday. But local business leaders are also promoting Shop Local Saturday as a way to support local retailers.

The Cape Cod Mall opened at 12:30 a.m. for the annual event.

Analysts are predicting a strong holiday season for retailers, citing increased consumer confidence due to an improving economy and falling gas prices.

The Retailers Association of Massachusetts, which has hundreds of members on the Cape, is predicting a 3.9 percent increase in sales this year.

Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross said her organization is encouraging people to shop local this holiday season.

“We try to do that year round and say please be mindful of the over 2,000 retailers on Cape Cod that are relatively small and could use your support,” Northcross said.

She said there are a number of reasons to shop local, including that it helps the local economy.

“We really want people to think about where they spend their money because when you spend money on a local business, that’s money that’s going to stay in the community,” she said.
