HYANNIS – An event yesterday drew a crowd of over 100, consisting mostly of local business owners and representatives of one of the largest employers on the Cape.

Joint Base Cape Cod tends to fly under the radar of many small business owners as a potential job opportunity, according to former base commander Anthony Schiavi.

“[The event] is a way to demystify the process; it really isn’t that hard and there are plenty of people on the base who are willing to work with small businesses here on the Cape,” he said.

Schiavi said the base brings 3,800 jobs to the Cape, with about $330,000,000 in economic impact each year.

Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross said she was worried many smaller businesses wouldn’t show up, perhaps believing they were too small to do business with a large establishment like the base.

“They all have their nuances, but they need everything from cleaning supplies to utilities to catering to tech services, so there’s a broad range of business that people can and should do with Joint Base Cape Cod,” Northcross said.

Schiavi pointed out that they commonly need contractors, HVAC, electrical and heating/cooling specialists as well.

A guide to contracting with the base is available here.
