Buzzards Bay Officials Troubled Over Park’s Water Usage

BUZZARDS BAY – Just weeks after the opening of the newly-renovated Buzzards Bay Park, some town officials are already expressing some concerns.

Buzzards Bay Water District administrators are voicing worries about the park’s water usage, following the year-long multi-million dollar overhaul.

Water District representatives say that they were not included in any of the planning meetings for the park and are troubled by the facility’s use of water for both an extensive irrigation system and new splash pad.

Town administrator Tom Guerino said that if the water department was excluded from the planning process, it was certainly unintentional.

“We will work with the water district,” he said.

“There was never any thought process not to.”

Town officials say that water consumption will be significantly reduced once the park’s new lawn has fully grown in.

In an effort to reduce water consumption, Guerino has announced that park hours will be adjusted, with the space now open from 10:30 AM until 7:30 PM, as opposed to the previous hours – 10 AM through 9PM.

The park, located along the Cape Cod Canal includes a performance pavilion, children’s play area with a splash pad and a memorial grove.

The project began roughly a year ago with residents approving $1.3 million from Community Preservation funds for the effort at last May’s town meeting.
