NEW BEDFORD – Summer is well underway and that means residents in the Buzzards Bay region are taking to the water for recreational activities.

Individuals interested in rowing have several opportunities to learn how to row, meet new people, get exercise and appreciate the local waters.

The Azorean Maritime Heritage Society in New Bedford rows and sails traditional whaleboats and practices in Clarks Cove from June through September.

The Buzzards Bay Rowing Club is based at the Fairhaven Shipyard and offers open rows in their whaleboats four times per week.

Sail Martha’s Vineyard is also home to a rowing club and members row in 32-foot Cornish pilot gigs around the island.

The New Bedford Rowing Center rows out of Pope’s Island Marina in New Bedford Harbor in racing shells. The center offers programs for adults and youth of all skill levels.

Racing shells are rowed in the 3.5 mile long South Watuppa Pond in Westport by the Watuppa Rowing Center, which offers programs for all ages including middle and high school summer camps.

And Whaling City Rowing takes to New Bedford Harbor in replica whaleboats.

These rowing clubs offer competition, socialization, fitness or all three.
