BUZZARDS BAY – The Buzzards Bay Coalition saw a massive turnout at its 12 Annual Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride on Sunday.
The ride saw a Coalition record of 242 cyclists for the largest-ever Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride. The large turnout also raised over $162,000 to support the Coalition’s education, conservation, research, and advocacy work.
The race began at Sakonnet Point in Little Compton, where 85 cyclists took off on the Watershed Ride’s 100-mile “Century Ride”. The riders wound through Little Compton’s and Westport’s scenic farmland to Horseneck Beach, where another 62 cyclists began a 75-mile trek.
“The Ride is memorable because the route is very beautiful. We rode along sections of southeastern Massachusetts that I had never seen before,” said Tanya Roy, a 100-mile rider from Wellesley.
“The Ride is a great way for me to contribute to the Coalition and its important mission in preserving the Buzzards Bay watershed.”
Riders stopped for lunch at Eastover Farm in Rochester after cycling through coastal South Dartmouth, the working waterfront of New Bedford, the Fairhaven Bike Path, and through the forested roads of Mattapoisett. It was at lunch in Rochester where an additional 95 riders joined the ride for its final 25 miles.
Cyclists made the final stretch through Wareham’s cranberry bogs, over the Bourne Bridge and down Falmouth’s Shining Sea Bikeway to a cheering crowd at the Woods Hole finish line.
The 13th Annual Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride is scheduled for October 6, 2019. Registration will begin in the spring of 2019.
