Wellfleet’s Cahoon Hollow Beach Parking Lot to Remain Closed

WELLFLEET – Selectmen in Wellfleet have made the decision to close the Cahoon Hollow Beach parking lot to the public this summer.

Due to safety concerns and repair cost estimates, DPW, police, fire and other town officials recommended the lot not be reopened.

A heavy rain storm last summer opened a large hole in the parking lot and dune which consumed a small car.

“The parking there will be limited to town of Wellfleet staff, because we will have life guards on duty,” said Suzanne Thomas, the beach administrator in Wellfleet. “And it will also provide emergency access for fire and police [personnel] as needed.”

Short-term repairs to the lot were not determined to be feasible due to the firmness of the land.

“The amount of stabilization, making the lot safe and the amount of time, money and manpower was not something the town was willing to expend,” she said.

The beach will remain open and a pedestrian path will be available.

“We will provide safe access to the beach as always,” Thomas said.

The town will not be providing a shuttle this summer from the White Crest Beach parking lot.

Thomas said she does expect the Beachcomber to continue running a free shuttle.

Thomas does not believe there will ever be public access parking at Cahoon Hollow Beach again.

“Our efforts and energy will be put into expanding the parking at White Crest,” she said. “Long-term the town will have its own shuttle system.”
