COTUIT – The Cahoon Museum of American Art will kick off its 2018 season later this month with an annual series of exhibitions highlighting contemporary art, traditional American art and New England craft traditions.

“A Swedish Folk Tale” tells the story of how artist Martha Farham Cahoon combined her Swedish folk-art heritage with Pennsylvania-German and early American design to create unique, decorative art, which had an impact on other Cape Cod artists.

The exhibition runs from March 21 through June 3

Also beginning March 21 is “Scrimshandering: Ralph Cahoon, Scrimshaw and Nantucket Whaling Heritage.”

The exhibition details the impact that scrimshaw, an American nautical folk art, had on the paintings of artist Ralph Cahoon.

Scrimshandering will be on view for the entire season through December 22.

The museum on Route 28 in Cotuit opens for the season on March 21 with regular hours and a free opening reception will be held March 23 from 4:30  to 6 p.m.
