Canadian Officials Confirm Two Right Whale Deaths

PROVINCETOWN – Canadian officials have confirmed the death of two endangered North Atlantic Right Whales in recent days.

It’s troubling news for a species that has been struggling to survive in recent years.

A female whale was found drifting in the Gulf of St. Lawrence last Wednesday.

Officials at the New England Aquarium in Boston told Canadian broadcasters that the whale was known as “Punctuation,” nicknamed as so because of small scars on her head that look like dashes and commas.

The species spend a significant amount of time in Cape Cod Bay each year feeding after returning from their breeding grounds off the southern United States coast.

The carcass of a second right whale, known as Wolverine, was found dead in the Gulf of St. Lawrence earlier this month.

In 2017, more than a dozen right whales were found dead in Canadian waters.

Experts estimate there are only 417 North Atlantic right whales left in the world.
