Canal Traffic Study Group Meeting Tonight in Sandwich

SANDWICH – The group looking at the future of transportation around and across the Cape Cod Canal will meet tonight in Sandwich.

The Cape Cod Transportation Study Group has been looking at ways to improve traffic problems around the aging Bourne and Sagamore bridges. The study will develop and analyze a number options for improvements to highway interchanges and local roads near the canal.

Tonight’s meeting is from 4:30 to 7 at Sandwich High School.

The meeting comes as the Army Corps of Engineers is in the middle of a three-year study of the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges, which opened in 1935. The Corps is looking at whether to continue to repair the bridges over the coming years or eventually replace them with modern spans.

Any decision regarding the bridges falls on the federal government, but the roads that lead up to them are under state control. The Cape Cod Transportation Study Group is an initiative being managed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Transportation.
