Cape Abilities Lights Up Cape Cod in Blue For Autism Awareness Month

HYANNIS – Blue lights can be seen lit up in several Cape Cod towns this month, as Cape Abilities recognizes national Autism Awareness Month.

By the organization’s report, nearly 1 out of every 68^th child born falls on the autism spectrum. The disorder affects neurological development, making it difficult for those with it to communicate their skills and causing some sensitivities to sight and sound.

Along with the worldwide initiative Light It Up Blue, Cape Abilities has teamed up with multiple organizations on Cape Cod to provide affected families with workshops and bonding events.

Cape Abilities President and Executive Director Rosalie Edes said the month-long celebration is an opportunity for both public education and personal assistance for families.

“People on the autism spectrum have a lot of skills, but sometimes the disorder gets in the way of being able to show their skills,” she said. “With appropriate types of services, we can help them tap into what their skills are and help them be successful.”

A free Autism and Law Enforcement Education Coalition training program entitled “Safety Training for Families of Children with Special Needs and their Families” will take place Tuesday, April 26^th. More information is available at capeabilities.org.

Autism can cause deficits in social interaction and learning. Edes said researchers are still trying to explain the high prevalence of diagnosed individuals.
