HARWICH – Cape Air CEO and Former Cape and Islands State Senator Dan Wolf was at The Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich on Thursday to hand out dogfish fillets to pantry clients.
Cape Air has supplied funding for the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance’s Fish for Families program that gives locally caught seafood to families in need.
“It’s sort of a home-run on all fronts, it’s fish, it’s Cape Cod, it’s the people who really use the pantry and need the pantry and it’s Cape Air, a local business that’s really committed to helping the community,” said Wolf.
Since its inception in 2013, the partnership with the Pantry has provided over 100,000 seafood meals to people on Cape Cod suffering from food insecurity.
Wolf, along with local fisherman John Our, handed out the fillets that were caught off Cape Cod.
“It’s sad and challenging how many people actually need the pantry to survive and feed their family, but it is also really encouraging to see the community coming together in an effort like this,” said Wolf.
Dogfish is an abundant but underutilized species that is harvested locally from July through late November.
It is one of several fish species that the Fish for Families program makes available to The Family Pantry and other Cape Cod Hunger Network pantries each year.
The project is also made possible with grants from Cape Cod Healthcare, the BJ’s Foundation, Cape & Islands United Way and the Citizens Bank Foundation.
