Cape and Islands Feature Busy Election Season, While Rest of Massachusetts Remains Quiet

KA_town elections selectman_orleans_election_051716_008HYANNIS – The Cape and Islands are bucking the trend when it comes to local Statehouse races in Massachusetts this year.

Of the 160 seats up for grabs in the Massachusetts House, candidates in 116 of the races are unopposed. That’s about 72 percent unopposed.

But on Cape Cod, half of the state representative seats have contests.

In the 2nd Barnstable, Republican Will Crocker and Democrat Aaron Kanzer are running for an open seat. In the 3rd Barnstable, incumbent Republican David Vieira faces a challenge from Democrat Matt Patrick.

Democrat Dylan Fernandes won his party’s nomination in the Barnstable/Dukes/Nantucket state representative seat. And while no Republican ran, Fernandes may still face a challenge from an independent candidate.

Representatives Sarah Peake (D) in the 4th Barnstable, Tim Whelan (R) in the 1st Barnstable and Randy Hunt (R) in the 5th Barnstable are all unopposed, as is Plymouth-Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo.

The Cape and Islands State Senate seat, being vacated by Democrat Dan Wolf, is sought by Democrat Julian Cyr and Republican Anthony Schiavi.

Cape Cod also has a contested race for Barnstable County Sheriff between incumbent Republican Jim Cummings and Democratic challenger Randy Azzato.

Four people are running for Barnstable County Commissioner, including Republicans Ron Beaty and Linda Bond and Democrats Mary Pat Flynn and Mark Forest.

And the 9th Congressional race features Republican challenger Mark Alliegro, who is trying to unseat Democratic incumbent William Keating.

Only four of the state’s nine U.S. House delegation seats have contests.

Neither of the state’s two U.S. senators — Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey — is up for election this year.
