HYANNIS – The Cape and Islands United Way is adopting a new model for 2016.

The organization has introduced a new Community Impact Agenda, which will help guide decision-making for the United Ways’ next round of grants, due in January.

“It is imperative that we partner with other funders and regional coalitions to address collective long-term solutions,” said Cape and Islands United Way President and CEO Barbara Milligan. “We can’t just keep plugging holes and watch the challenges facing our local communities grow larger; we have to develop a unified front and solve the problems.”

Solving the problems include the appointment of a United Way Community Impact Council.

The local body, representing specific expertise in the four new focus areas, as well as in outcomes measurement, will monitor the Impact Agenda in light of current projects and community conditions, guide evaluation strategies and recommend funding priorities.

There will be four Community Investment Committees reporting to the Council – Health, Education, Financial Stability and Housing.

A citizen volunteer model will remain central to the grant evaluation process.

The new Agenda’s goal, ultimately, is to make sure that the resources entrusted to the organization are invested as wisely as possible to achieve strong, viable, safe communities across the Cape and Islands.

“Providing collective solutions and an integrated continuum of services is paramount, as is encouraging a lean and strategically-aligned nonprofit sector,” said Milligan. “We are uniquely positioned and believe it is our responsibility, to champion and drive this effort.”
