Cape Cod Churches Seeking Donations for Hurricane Harvey Relief

EAST HARWICH – About 11 churches in Brewster, Chatham and Harwich are coming together to take part in the Lower Cape Ecumenical Hurricane Harvey Relief Project.

The churches are looking to send much-needed supplies to Houston to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey impacted the area last month.

They are seeking donations to fill a 24 foot trailer that will be transported to Houston.

Donations of cleaning supplies, toiletries, food, pet food and bottled water will be accepted.

“All sorts of different things that could be used when you’ve lost everything, but still need to brush your teeth or wash your hair or sanitize your hands,” said St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Pastor Tiffany Nicely Holleck.

A parishioner of one of the churches owns the trailer and is also donating his time to transport the supplies.

So far, the number of donations from members of the churches has led organizers to believe that they have more than enough to fill the trailer, but they are continuing to accept more donations and are looking for anyone with a second trailer.

The churches are working directly with the First Baptist Church of Houston, which is acting as a hub to distribute relief supplies to the community.

RPM Carpets has donated $500 and Ace Hardware is donating cleanup supplies.

“It doesn’t just have to be the church people and these two local businesses, we’re just the ones who are putting together the bare bones project to allow others to come in and bring the supplies that we need that have been asked for down there and it’s nice to feel like I’ve done something to help,” said Holleck.

Donations will be accepted at the collection point at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in East Harwich on October 1st and 2nd from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
