BOSTON — A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod evacuated two men off their sailboat Friday after it ran hard aground near Lovells Island in Boston Harbor.

The owner of the sailboat, Silent Passage, radioed Coast Guard Sector Boston watchstanders at about 1 p.m. reporting they had run aground on the rocks. They had also contacted a commercial salvage company to come assist them.

Station Point Allerton 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew diverted from patrol to see if they could assist the sailing vessel. Due to low tide, the boat crew and the commercial salvage company could not reach the sailboat.

Initially, the plan was to wait for the tide to refloat the sailing vessel, but the wind speed increased to between 20-30 knots and the situation was becoming unsafe.

The coxswain of the 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew recommended a helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod come to evacuate the people off their sailboat, and the vessel get salvaged when the weather permits.

The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched at 4:40 p.m. to evacuate the men from their sailboat.

No injuries were reported.
