Cape Cod Cares for the Troops Ready to Run Along the Cape Cod Canal

CC4TroopsBUZZARDS BAY – Cape Cod Cares for the Troops will be holding their seventh annual Canal Run for the Troops today.

The event will take place at the Buzzards Bay Recreational Area and registration will start at 8:30 a.m. for the 5K and 10K runs with a 10 a.m. start.

The cost to participate is $20 with advance registration and $25 on the day of the event.

The money raised this year will be used to pay the postage for 1,500 Christmas Care packages being sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in November.

The cost of the postage will be around $33,000.

“We’re going to videotape the whole thing, we’ll do a slideshow, we’ll put it on a CD, we’ll put it in care packages going over there, so that the men and women over in Afghanistan and other areas will know that they’ve got the support back here at home,” said organizer Michelle DeSilva.

Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops is a non-profit organization started in 2005 by DeSilva’s son Dylan.

Last month, the organization started a new program called “Talking to the Moon” which provides support and needs for the caretakers of wounded warriors.

The organization sends letters and gift cards to the caretakers to show them positive support.
