MASHPEE – The Grand Marshal has been announced for the 18th Annual Seaside Le Mans at Mashpee Commons next weekend.
Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross will lead the ceremonies for the event which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Cape Cod Community.
Teams from dozens of local companies compete in a four-hour endurance race, presented by The Davenport Companies, on Formula One race karts through a course along the streets of the Commons.
Aside from the race, there are many family activities to be enjoyed. One new event this year will be the attempt to assemble 240 bicycles in the 240 minutes that the race lasts. The finished bikes will be donated to local children.
Each year five beneficiaries are chosen to receive the funds raised from the event.
This year’s recipients are Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Healthcare, Cape Cod Children’s Place, Cape Cod Theatre Company Home of the Harwich Jr. Theatre, and Dream Day on Cape Cod.
With kart sponsorships, matching funds and the Drivers Cup Fundraising Challenge, this year’s race will raise $600,000 bringing the 18-year total to more than $6.5 million.
The race attracts more than 10,000 people each year.
The event is September 8. Opening ceremonies begin at 11:30 a.m.
