Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance Seeking Final Comments on Herring Protections

CHATHAM–The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance is looking for public comments in regards to the protection of herring by tomorrow, October 21.

This comes in the wake of protections that were vetted by NOAA and recently published on the Federal Register. In the protections, the New England Fishery Management Council has accepted proposals to keep midwater trawls off the coast throughout the year. These fish nets, the size of football fields, would be required to stay at least 12 miles offshore and 20 miles off of the Cape’s backshore.

The Alliance is hoping the public speaks out to ensure that these rules are officially implemented, arguing that the regulations would benefit fisheries across the area as well as the ecosystem close to the shore.
