Cape Cod Commission Seeks Input on Future Transportation Projects

BARNSTABLE – The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization has released two documents to the public outlining the plans for future transportation improvement projects in the region.

The Cape Cod Transportation Improvement Program draft, which is a capital plan for the next five years, highlights transportation projects involving federal funding.

The plan prioritizes roadway, bridge and transit projects being proposed.

“The document represents $167 million over the next five years,” said Steven Tupper, the transportation program manager for the Cape Cod Commission.

Projects include the reconstruction of Route 28 and Yarmouth Road in Hyannis, a redo of Route 151 in Mashpee and improvements to Main Street in Wellfleet and Shankpainter Road in Provincetown.

“All of those improvement projects are in the design phase right now, so there is a separate process working with the community for getting the actionable improvements,” Tupper said. “In terms of getting the projects funding there is still an important role for the public right now.”

The Unified Planning Work Program draft is a scope of work for the transportation studies which will be worked on over the course of the year.

“Many of these projects will take 10 or more years to construct and you aren’t going to get there unless you get started,” Tupper said. “The point of this effort is to really start with the design phase and then move on to seeking funding.”

Public comments for the drafts will be accepted through May 14 through mail, facsimile or email.

Comments can be mailed to Cape Cod Commission Transportation Program, Steven Tupper Transportation Program Manager, 3225 Main Street (Route 6A) or PO Box 226, Barnstable, MA 02630-0226. Faxed comments to the attention of Steven Tupper can be sent to 508-362-3136. Emails can be sent to [email protected] with “TIP” or “UPWP” in the subject line.

A public meeting will also be held May 21 at 1 p.m. to hear additional comments and to consider endorsement of these documents. The meeting will be held at the Cape Cod Commission Office on Route 6A in Barnstable.
