MASHPEE – Congestion at the Mashpee Rotary has been a frustration for motorists for years, and now the Cape Cod Commission will be investigating options to help alleviate the issue.

As part of their ongoing Route 28 corridor improvement plan, commission officials will conduct studies, host public forums, and consider potential solutions before offering both short and long-term recommendations for improvement.

The rotary, which merges five roadways including the oft congested Route 28, Route 151, and Great Neck Road, frequently leading to stand-still traffic, particularly during the summer season.

“There are certainly some short term things that can be done and we’ll be including those, hope to get some of those safety improvements out in the short term,” said Steven Tupper, the Commission’s Program Manager

“But in the long term it’s a challenge balancing those heavy regional traffic flows we see through this intersection and making sure it also works for those more local trips.”

The Commission is in the process of similar studies into both the Hyannis Airport Rotary and the Bourne Bridge Rotary in the hopes of further reducing area traffic congestion.

“This would be a multi modal look at that region in Mashpee,” explained Tupper, “We start by looking at the data, looking at the traffic volume, the crash history in the area, and then then going out into the community and try to hear what concerns folks have in terms of getting around in that area.”

The discussion comes at an important time for the surrounding area as Mashpee Commons officials consider large-scale expansion possibilities in the vicinity, which would likely lead to greater strain on traffic.

In a 2010 report the Commission described the Mashpee Rotary as the 28th most dangerous place for driving in the county, with 32 reported crashes.
