BARNSTABLE – The Cape Cod Commission has turned down the project to construct a 110-room Marriott hotel in the center of downtown Falmouth.

The commission voted against accepting the limited Development of Regional Impact approval drawn up by staff on behalf of a commission subcommittee that studied the plan.

The commission needs to take another vote to officially deny the project based on a new decision written up by staff. That is scheduled to take place at the commission’s next meeting on September 17.

There were 11 commissioners that voted to turn down the project against 7 in favor.

Neighbors and other Falmouth residents had come out strongly against the plan in hearings over several months.

Falmouth Selectmen had also sent a letter to the commission that the project did not fit in to the character of the community.
