Cape Cod Community College May Arm Campus Officers

Cape_Cod_Community_College_001BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Community College is considering a policy change that would allow public safety officers at the school to carry firearms on the campus.

If there was an active shooter incident at the campus, Barnstable Police would be the closest agency, but it could take minutes before they arrive.

The policy change would reflect those made at other college campuses across the country.

The college’s three officers have experience carrying firearms and have undergone background checks by state police.

“These are certified sworn police officers, who would be certified, trained and regularly maintaining their training here on our campus,” said college spokesman Michael Gross.

There have been previous issues with firearms on the campus.

Four years ago a student was arrested for having a loaded semi-automatic handgun in class and a year later, a man threatened to shoot students in a class.

“Taking a look at what’s happened tragically around the country over the last few years, anything that you can do to shorten the time that an individual is confronted does save lives,” said Gross.

If the policy change were approved, the public safety officers would undergo tests and training with the Barnstable Police Department in an effort to be armed by this fall.
