BARNSTABLE – The Orlando nightclub shooting victims were honored and remembered during an interfaith prayer service at Cape Cod Community College Thursday night.
The event included prayers, musical performances and speeches.
Father John French spoke at the event and said that the service was also a time for reflection.
“The only thing that we believe is that hatred can only be overcome by love and that’s what we’re trying to do, is just to share that love with our fellow community members and hopefully from that it will spread from here on and on,” said French. “Guns don’t stop hatred, but love does.”
Participants also read the names of the Orlando victims out loud as part of the nearly one hour service.
The service was held at the Peace Garden and was co-sponsored by the Cape Cod Interfaith Coalition and the Cape Cod Council of Churches.
James Kershner, a professor at the college and a member of the Buddhist order and the Cape Cod Interfaith Coalition, helped organize the service.
“I think it’s important for us to come together and reaffirm that the things we have in common are greater than the things that divide us,” said Kershner.
