HYANNIS – Democrats running for office across Cape Cod and the Islands got a boost Wednesday from fellow Democratic U.S. Senator Ed Markey, who made stops in Falmouth and Hyannis.
Markey rallied with state representative candidates Dylan Fernandes, Matt Patrick, Aaron Kanzer and Cape and Islands State Senate candidate Julian Cyr.
He said all four represent the core values of the Democratic Party. “We have here an incredible opportunity to have these voices added to the Statehouse,” said Markey.
He also said the Democrats had a good chance to pick up and retain seats in the state Legislature.
Speaking to Democrats in Falmouth, Markey said they represent the values of the voters.
“Every child has healthcare, that’s a Democratic initiative — we’re the number 1 environmental state in the union; in terms of solar deployment, we’re number 4 in America,” he said.
Fernandes, running in the Barnstable/Dukes/Nantucket seat, said he was honored to have Markey support his campaign.
“We share a deep commitment to environmental issues. The senator has been a champion for that on the federal level, and I’m hoping to carry the torch locally,” said Fernandes, who is running against independent candidate Tobias Glidden.
Matt Patrick, looking to unseat Republican 3rd Barnstable State Representative David Vieira, said Markey’s appearance can make a difference.
“He’s such an icon. When I was in the Statehouse he was a legend,” said Patrick.
And with just a few days left to go before the election, Markey told Democrats it was time to work as hard as possible.
“Keep you energy level high and take advantage of this wind that’s blowing at our back. We have a Republican presidential candidate who is articulating no values,” said Markey.
The senator campaigned with Cyr and Kanzer later in the day in Hyannis.
