Cape Cod Environmental Group in Opposition to Atlantic Ocean Offshore Drilling Proposal

Andrew Gottlieb.

DENNIS – The Association to Preserve Cape Cod has sent a letter to the acting director of the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management after a proposal to begin a five-year program which would allow offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans was unveiled.

The letter was submitted during a public comment period following the announcement of the proposal, and the APCC states that there is too much inherent risk to allow drilling in these areas.

“The introduction of oil and gas into the waters of Cape Cod would be catastrophic not only for our environment but for the entire economic well-being of the region,” said Andrew Gottlieb, APCC’s Executive Director.

The organization also states the risks far outweigh any potential yield that may result from offshore drilling.

“The relatively small amount of oil and gas that might be available offshore is not anywhere near worth the risk Cape Cod would be assuming were those resources allowed to be developed,” Gottlieb said.

The current National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program includes a moratorium on drilling in these two regions.
