Cape Cod Farmers’ Markets Get Extra Attention from Gov. Baker This Week

Farmers MarketsBARNSTABLE – Farmers across Cape Cod and the country are being recognized over the next several days.

Gov. Charlie Baker has declared this week “Farmer’s Market Week,” coinciding with the 16th annual National Farmers’ Market Week.

“Farmers’ markets are crucial direct market venues for growers across the Commonwealth and help ensure the continued viability of family farms and local food production,” said Baker. “I encourage everyone to support Massachusetts’ hard-working farmers by visiting their local farmers’ market this week.”

The Cape and Islands have become a hub for markets in recent years, with 14 markets running in the region each week. Statewide, there are roughly 250 summer markets, a significant jump from the 69 markets in the state in 1987. There are about 40 markets running during the winter months.

“Not only do farmers’ markets strengthen the Commonwealth’s vital agricultural industry, they also provide healthy food to our communities,” said Matthew Beaton, the state’s Secretary of Energy and  Environmental Affairs.

Over 7,500 farms in Massachusetts produce nearly $500 million in agricultural products annually. Farmers’ markets sales account for nearly 10 percent of those sales.

“The farmers and food producers who make these markets possible and communities that host them reflect the growing demand of the Buy-Local movement. The variety of farm products and specialty foods found at farmers’ markets is stunning and the quality and craftsmanship from our local farmers and food producers cannot be beat,” said Department of Agricultural Resources Commissioner John Lebeaux.
